If post-millennial hip-hop seems to have reached a commercial dead-end, it only serves to single out its maverick personalities all that much more (witness chart-topping nut jobs Gnarls Barkley). Bay Area eccentrics Subtle are probably everything you can imagine besides their namesake. Dispensing altogether with mainstream hip-hop's holy rulebook, and worshipping instead at the altar of the avant-garde, Subtle cobble together a patchwork of psychedelic rock, tape collages, and skewed rhymes. Led by the oblique poetry of cLOUDdEAD rhymesmith Doseone along with a coterie of his Anticon labelmates, Subtle's second album FOR HERO: FOR FOOL ups the ante on weirdness. Alternating stream-of-consciousness raps with musical non-sequiturs, Subtle's aural surrealism recalls the Residents and Devo at their most absurd. |
