Something of an unsung heroine of the 1960s and '70s singer-songwriter era, the Kentucky-born artist Jackie DeShannon penned hits for Brenda Lee, the Searchers, and in the 1980s for Kim Carnes, as well as scoring chart success in her own right with classics like the Bacharach-David song "What the World Needs Now" and her own "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." A companion to its previous excellent COME AND GET ME compilation, Raven Records' HIGH COINAGE gathers material from some of the singer's lesser-known but equally superlative releases. Notable inclusions are the early-'60s pop opus "Heaven Is Being With You", the rocking "Breakaway" (the latter a 1980s hit for comedian Tracey Ullman), the mid-'60s Phil Spector-esque songs "For Granted" and "500 Miles from Yesterday," early-'70s country-soul outings such as her version of the Band's "The Weight," and the 5th Dimension-influenced pop-soul of "Brighton Hill."
