She shares some of the roots-conscious sensibility of history-respecting artists like Maxwell and Musiq Soulchild, but she ranges far beyond merely updating '70s soul grooves with hip-hop production tricks. Her lyrics are thoughtful and carefully constructed (more than one can say for many of her less creative contemporaries), and her musical palette is wide-ranging.
