The Master Musicians of Jajouka are a legendary musical collective who hail from the mountains of Northern Morocco. Their repetitive, hypnotic sound is composed of ecstatic ululations, unrelenting percussion, and chaotic, fanfare-like blasts from double-reed horns. When an infatuated Brian Jones recorded the group in the late '60s, they were led by the master reed player Hadj Abdesalam Attar. Attar's son Bachir Attar leads the group on this incendiary live recording. The performance featured here was part of a larger tribute concert in honor of the writer Paul Bowles, who became an early backer of the group while living in Tangiers. |
