Wooden Birds: David Wingo, Leslie Sisson, Andrew Kenny, Chris Michaels. Formed by American Analog Set frontman Andrew Kenny in Austin, Texas, Wooden Birds aim for a familiar poignancy as much as Kenny's other band, but with stripped-down, vaguely alt-country parameters. While recent contemporaries such as Iron & Wine are a natural reference point, MAGNOLIA finds distinction in the woozy harmonizing between Kenny and Leslie Sisson, and feels a lot more willing to come out of the shell of bedroom-style recordings. Which makes sense, because in total, the Birds represent a natural, and exceedingly easy-to-listen-to, mid-point between hushed neo-folk and the fleshed-out textures of AAS. |
