Gas: Wolfgang Voigt. Wolfgang Voigt's fifth Gas outing is about as pop as Penderecki. Like that minimal classicist, Voigt (aka Mike Ink, et al) reaches deep into the ether to mold bits of sonic flotsam into a somehow congruous, if single-minded, whole. Taken in the context of the Gas back catalog, POP is a gorgeous, enthralling work-seven untitled tracks of atmospheric, ergonomic, and metronomic bliss. Voigt's modus operandi seems disarmingly simple. Take a few carefully chosen samples, here hijacked from obscure classical albums, mutate them beyond recognition, and elongate their molecular structures to embrace infinity. Track one's repetitive, angelic electronics and dribbling loops unfold and ripen along a defined linear plane. Pitch and modulation change almost infinitesimally, morphing into track two. By track four, the thudding of a distant kick drum resounds in Voigt's arctic, electronic loop land.
