Personnel: Chris Eldridge (vocals, guitar); Greg Garrison (vocals, bass instrument); Chris Thile, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny (vocals). Audio Mixers: Steven Epstein; Richard King . The Punch Brothers' PUNCH may well be the album on which bluegrass, after a long courtship, finally pops the question to progressive rock. Comprising an all-star band led by former Nickel Creek mandolin player Chris Thile and well-known acoustic guitarist Chris Eldridge, the Punch Brothers essay four brief, crisp pieces of traditional-style bluegrass on their debut album. The heart of PUNCH, however, is the four-movement suite "The Blind Leading the Blind," an extended composition that drifts from languid, jazzy mood music to Aaron Copland-like classical Americana to full-on ripping bluegrass and back in the course of its 42 minutes. |
