Details: Jason Molina--the given name of the brainchild behind both Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co.--was releasing albums at a Prince-like clip throughout the early 2000s. In 2007, he outdid himself with this almost perverse colossus: a four-disc box set of all new material, a tour DVD, and other paraphernalia. The four discs that make up SOJOURNER--NASHVILLE MOON, SUN SESSION, THE BLACK RAM, and SHOHOLA--inform each other's greatness and collectively round out the whole of Molina's graceful and stark Americana vision. Steve Albini recorded NASHVILLE MOON and brings to it his bare-is-better approach. The results sound like an incredible live set. The band is the best that Molina has ever had, and they follow his loose structures effortlessly. "Lonesome Valley," "Montgomery," and "Don't Fade on Me" all feature elegiac lead guitar and steel playing off each other rapturously and finding the common ground between Molina's troubadour soul and a crack roadhouse band.
