Just as the subtitle indicates, Roy Hamilton was in some ways the Roy Orbison of 1960s soul: he transformed mere heartbreak into epic drama. Operatically trained, Hamilton had a string of pop hits in the 1950s, with safe versions of standards like "Ebb Tide," after which he briefly retired before returning with a tougher, more soulful sound. Though his commercial peak was behind him once he left Epic Records in 1962, this 28-track compilation of the singles Hamilton recorded between 1963 and his 1969 death reveals that he had not lost his startling vocal power. |
