This World War II era mystery is dryly humorous, hard-boiled New York noir with a feminist twist. When Faye Quick's boss, Woody Mason, left to fight World War II, she took over his company, called A Detective Agency so it would be listed first in the phone book. This 26-year-old PI is one feisty, tough-talkin' broad, and so she doesn't flinch when one snowy night, she trips over the dead body of a young woman, Claudette West. Claudette's parents hire Faye to find out who did it, although they've already pinned their suspicions on their daughter's ex-fiance, Richard Cotten. But as Faye investigates, the field of suspects widens considerably. |
