Searching for a DJ that brings underground hip-hop's cutting-edge scratching and sampling to the mainstream? Look no further than Queens, NY native Z-Trip (Zach Sciacca), whose major-label debut, SHIFTING GEARS, does just that. The first half of GEARS is a nod to hip-hop's early, feel-good jams, reflected in DJ/MC give-and-take with Jurassic 5's Soup on the party rap "Listen to the DJ." By the time the latter half of the album rolls in, the names are bigger and the topics get heavier. Chuck D delivers a trademark apocalyptic sermon on the ominous "Shock and Awe," which sports heavy-metal samples. Equally as foreboding is Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, who rants about death and digging up old loves in "Walking Dead" amid thudding beats and ominous strings reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails by way of Gravediggaz.
