| Slumber Party: Naomi Ruth, Raquel Salaysay, Aliccia Berg. Personnel: Alia Allen (vocals, guitar, percussion); Naomi Ruth (vocals, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Raquel Salaysay (vocals, synthesizer); Aliccia Berg (guitar, piano, organ, synthesizer, drum machine); Patty Berg (guitar, bells); Frances Reade (organ). On its fourth full-length release, the Detroit post-punk girl group's artless vocals and playful instrumentation conjure 1970s ancestors like the Raincoats and the Slits. The band also accesses its folk-memory of 1960s psychedelia on cuts like the tranced-out "This Is Wide" and the dark, Syd Barrett-like "So Sick," while "Electric Ocean" could have been taken directly from Brian Eno's TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN BY STRATEGY, and the deceptive simplicity of "Destruction/Construction" owes much to the Velvet Underground's '60s art-rock playbook. |
