Always prone to rock music, the Meat Puppets came roaring out of the gate with 1994's TOO HIGH TO DIE, leaving the softer-edged, jazzy experimentalism of albums like UP ON THE SUN in the dust. The high-octane opener "Violet Eyes" peels off distorted riffs that would make Guns N' Roses proud. "We Don't Exist" has a crunchy, in-the-pocket punch that belies its quizzical existential message, and the band's first certified radio hit, "Backwater," lets a hard-rock boogie-rhythm carry the tune's sprightly melody. None of this is to say that the Meat Puppets have traded in their brains for brawn here. Mixing styles and surprises is still the group's forte--there are jangly angles and remarkably surreal lyrics on "Never to be Found," country-fied folk on "Shine," and loping, mid-tempo meditations on "Why?"
