More Information
Details: Recorded between 1955 & 1961. Includes liner notes by Wade Jessen. Digitally remastered by Benny Quinn (Masterfonics, Inc., Nashville, Tennessee). This is part of RCA Records' The Essential Series. A nice collection of Cline in her (mostly) hard country mode, although the "essential" in the title is somewhat misleading, given the absence of "Crazy" or "I Fall to Pieces.". Highlights, apart from the familiar title song, include "A Church, A Courtroom and The Goodbye," a divorce song to end all divorce songs, driven by mournful pedal steel guitar and fiddle and featuring the immortal line "I hate the sight of that courtroom/where man made laws push god's laws aside" (sung by Cline with utter gravitas); "I Don't Wanna," an obvious attempt at crossover with a nice Everly Brothers guitar riff; and "Life's Railway to Heaven," an interesting extended metaphor with backup vocals obviously inspired by the Browns 1959 hit "The Three Bells."
