Personnel: Ann Pearson (vocals); Robert Fleay (guitar). Unknown Contributor Role: Jyoti Mishra. White Town is Jyoti Mishra, an Indian-born Englishman who recorded these stripped-down orchestral maneuvers in the darkness of his own bedroom. Mishra writes ballads about terribly romantic losers in love, the kinds of guys who not only get dumped, but then get beat up by their ex-lover's brother or dressed down by dad. He sets them to perfect replicas of '80s synth-pop, with bouncy bass-and-synthesizer melodies over simple drum-machine beats. In deference to the '90s and the influence of indie-rock, Mishra also deploys soft cells of analog noise and more than a little guitar.
