Personnel: Roy Bookbinder (vocals, guitar); David "Rock Bottom" York (harmonica); J.P. Coley (acoustic bass); Glenn Evans (percussion). The arrangements on Roy Bookbinder's fourth Rounder release run the gamut from solo vocal and guitar to full quartet (with producer/harmonica player Rock Bottom, J.P. Coley on upright bass and percussionist Glenn Evans). It's good to finally have Bookbinder's versions of Blind Boy Fuller's "Rag Mama" and Jason Wilber's "The Ballad of Amazing Grace and Side Show Dan" on record, both of which have long been staples of his live show. He tackles other guitar classics like "Baby Let Me Lay It On You" (recorded by Dylan as "Baby Let Me Follow You Down"), Blind Blake's "Police Dog Blues" and a one-minute "Married Man's A Fool" (both recorded at one point or another by Ry Cooder). Bookbinder also contributes half a dozen tunes of his own, plays a little bottleneck and covers a couple of rockabilly/country tunes--Jimmy Murphy's "Electricity" and Billy Joe Shaver's "I'm Just An Ol... |
