Packaged very similarly to the 1996 Capitol Records compilation of the same name, 1998's GREATEST HITS on Soul City consists of live and studio re-recordings of Johnny Rivers' '60s and '70s hits. Rivers apparently re-recorded tracks such as "Memphis," "Poor Side of Town," and "Secret Agent Man" because he doesn't control the rights to the original Liberty Records/Soul City Records masters. While his voice remains as soulful and impressive as ever, this collection is primarily of interest to hardcore Johnny Rivers fans. Others are advised to purchase the aforementioned Capitol release, or another of the many repackagings of Rivers' '60s singles. |
