2 LPs on 1 CD: THE FABULOUS SOUNDS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST (1984)/TOPSY TURVY (1985). This CD combines The Young Fresh Fellows' first two albums, 1984's FABULOUS SOUNDS and 1985's TOPSY TURVY. Though the Seattle-based Fellows have nothing in common with the grunge bands that dominated the city's scene by 1990, they were still a half dozen years ahead of the Seattle music boom. First and foremost, the Fellows' music is fun. There's no angst to be found here and no whining, complaining, or ranting. The Fellows' debut album is filled with catchy songs played with equal measures of commitment and abandon. The well-written songs, primarily penned by Scott McCaughey, are arranged with taste and verve. The Fellows are a quartet-two guitars, bass, and drums-and they play from a solid base of rock & roll tradition. Yet they've always sounded like no one else, from the very first track of their debut album ("Rock 'n' Roll Pest Control") onwards. They're that special. |
