This self-titled release finds eclectic guitarist Charlie Hunter reaching for new ground, employing more ethnic sounds and primal grooves than in his past efforts. His highly developed 8-string guitar virtuosity is, of course, the focus, but the contributions of percussionists Leon Parker, Stephen Chopek, and Robert Perkins must not be overlooked. Also appearing on several cuts are saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum and trombonist Josh Roseman. Hunter plays his 8-string with all the funky smoothness of Jimmy Smith.
