CLAIRVOYANCE was originally a limited edition vinyl only release. Screaming Trees: Mark Lanegan (vocals); Gary Lee Conner (electric guitar); Van Conner (bass guitar); Mark Pickerel (drums). Personnel: Lanegan (violin); Steve Fisk (piano); Gary Lee (organ); Michael "Pete" Peterson, Joey Conner (background vocals). Recording information: 1986. This 2005 reissue of the Screaming Trees' 1986 debut prompts a historical reassessment of the Washington State band's significance. Though lumped in with the grunge movement of the 1990s, Mark Lanegan and company were actually mixing retro-'60s psych, gut-wrenching punk, and loop-driven sonic experimentation in a way that set them well apart from their contemporaries. CLAIRVOYANCE is proof positive of the Trees' creativity, as heard on standout tracks like "Orange Airplane" and "Standing on the Edge." The band would go on to refine their sound (releasing albums on Epic in the '90s), but it is here that the unique and alluring journey of the Screaming Trees began. |
