NOFX are now elder statesmen of the pop-punk genre: they've been kicking up catchy, edgy, socially satirical skate-punk since the mid-'80s, predating the arrival of the bandwagon by several years. Their 2006 EP, NEVER TRUST A HIPPY, shows that NOFX have lost none of their snarling, comic edge, and that their tunes--driven by slicing guitar and jackhammer drumbeats--are as fun and melodically on-point as ever. Over the course of the EP's six songs NOFX take on anarchists, religious fundamentalists, and even Jesus himself (the cover art depicts Christ holding a bottle of red wine and flashing the peace sign: suggesting that he is one of the hippies the title warns us against). As always, NOFX are daring, rebellious, and energetic, but their tongues are, thankfully, planted firmly in their cheeks. |
