Together with fellow composer Martin Denny, Les Baxter was a past master at the art of creating the 1950s and '60s genre of music known as exotica--expertly performed orchestral sounds that evoked foreign and sometimes even alien worlds in a way palatable to the ears of domestic audiences. This best-of collects a variety of Baxter's '50s output, like the Latin-tinged "Quiet Village," originally penned for Denny, the jaunty, memorable, whistling chorus of "The Poor People of Paris," and, with Baxter's tongue firmly in cheek, the still-amusing spoof of "I've Got You Under My Skin," featuring the great comedian Stan Freberg. |
