Personnel: James Brown (vocals). Arranger: Full Force. Old-school Brown fans may be somewhat taken aback by the sound of this 1990 release. I'M REAL finds Brown-accompanied by the young, Brooklyn-based hip-hop/R&B group Full Force-getting down with the aid of beats, turntables, loops, samples, and multi-part harmonies. Any sense of incongruity quickly fades, however, as Brown's vintage funky formulas adapt perfectly and sound almost as fly wielded alongside the DJ tricks of the '90s as they did wedded to the JB's glorious grooves in the '70s. Brown "uh!"s and "heh!"s his way through the title track, "Time To Get Busy," "Can't Git Enuf," and seven other eminently danceable jams, proving that he still is-and always will be-the Godfather of Soul. |
