| The CD is packaged in a double jewelbox because the booklet which is included is so thick! Composed by Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. The song "Someone Else's Story" appears only on the U.S. version. Things did not augur well for the Broadway opening of Chess in the spring of 1988. The show had been conceived by lyricist Tim Rice, and, like earlier rock operas of his such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, it began life as a double concept album before being adapted to the stage. Rice had split with his composing partner, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who had gone on to further successes with much less story-centered works like Cats. On Chess, Rice combined with another team fresh from a breakup, forming a sort of songwriting supergroup with Benny Andersson and Bj?rn Ulvaeus, late of ABBA. For Chess, Rice's idea was a fictionalized version of the world chess championship at Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1972, in which bad-boy American Bobby Fischer beat Russian Boris Spassky in a tournament with Cold War... |
