You will find few better examples of the old-growth rain forest that once extended gloriously from California to Alaska than here in Chuck River Wilderness on the mainland coast of southeast Alaska. The U.S. Forest Service describes this area as one of the last northern mainland stands of riparian spruce forest along a major river not entered with roads or logging activity. The Chuck River flows out of the heart of the area northward to empty into lovely Windham Bay where the Chuck Mining Camp once operated. Windham Bay opens off Stephens Passage and is a relatively popular destination for recreational boaters and small tour boat operators. Elevations range from sea level to about 5,000 feet on the eastern boundary. The region is a major producer of salmon, especially pink salmon, which are commercially harvested here in great numbers. Black bears and mountain goats are known to live in the forested mountains. |
