The preserve is composed of a 1,426 acre lake built on the floodplain of the Illinois River in 1971 by Commonwealth Edison Company as a cooling reservoir for the fossil-fuel power plant.<br><br><b>Directions:</b>&nbsp;&nbsp;From the city of Pekin, take Illinois Rte 29 south approximately 1 mile to Manito Rd, turn right (west) and go 2 miles to the site entrance. If traveling north on IL Rte 29, approximately 1 mile south of Pekin, turn left (west) on Manito Rd and go 2 miles to the site entrance.
