Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is located in the Rio Grande flood plain in south Texas. Many species found here are at the northern edge of their range and cannot be seen elsewhere in the United States. In the refuge's drier areas, tangles of low-growing shrubs provide excellent habitat for a few endangered ocelot and jaguarundi. Resacas or oxbow lakes provide habitat for many water bird species such as least and pied-billed grebe, fulvous and black-bellied whistling ducks, mottled duck, least bittern, and green heron. Many other wildlife species benefit from resaca wetlands, too, including green kingfisher, Couch's kingbird, giant toad, diamondback water snake, and Rio Grande lesser siren. |
