Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge lies in the floodplain of the Upper Mississippi River in west central Wisconsin. The refuge adjoins both the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge and Perrot State Park. A railroad dike built in the 1860's and two diversion dikes built in 1911 isolate the refuge from the direct influences of the Upper Mississippi and Trempealeau Rivers. These dikes diverted the Trempealeau River from its natural confluence with the Upper Mississippi River to a point just downstream from Trempealeau Mountain. The refuge provides resting and feeding habitat for a variety of migratory birds including bald eagles, American white pelicans, soras and other rails, nineteen species of ducks, and numerous species of warblers. |
