After a five-year gap between albums (which also saw the split-up of Vega and her producer/husband Mitchell Froom), Suzanne Vega returned to the fray in 2001 with SONGS IN RED AND GRAY. Liberated from the trademark sound-stamp of Froom, Vega ventures into new sonic areas via the organic-but-inventive production of British journeyman Rupert Hine. From the angular, catchy "Widow's Walk" to the acoustic-oriented folk balladry of the anachronistic-sounding "Harbor Song," Vega's divorce obviously informs many of the lyrics here, but there are plenty of other topics at work. "(I'll Never be) Your Maggie May" is an endearingly melodic folk-rocker that tackles the older woman-younger... |
