Details: Between the months of March through November, Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge shelters the largest urban bat colony in the United States. Approximately 1.5 million bats set up camp under the bridge each summer, consuming approximately 30,000 pounds of pesky insects each evening. To accommodate what has become one of Austin's most popular tourist attractions, Bat Conservation International has established a center to observe the fuzzy fliers; visitors congregate at the one-acre plot about an hour before the bats emerge.
