Details: Nearly 1,500 competitors, ages 18-80, compete from 50 countries and 50 states. Most competitors qualify at Ironman qualifying races worldwide; nearly 50,000 annually enter qualifiers. Another 4,000 enter the race lottery, which awards 150 slots to U.S. citizens and 75 slots to international athletes. In recognition of their athletic accomplishment, the 1999 age group champions automatically qualified for the 2000 race.
