Craig, your epinion was very informative and as an Australian manufacturer of kangaroo leather for soccer shoes, I was again disappointed to hear that kangaroo cleats are out of the reach of the average consumer. Let me give you some information about kangaroo and why it is most popular for soccer shoes. There is no other leather in the world that has the strength for its thickness. Normal cow hide needs to be about 3 - 5 times thicker than kangaroo before it can attain a similar strength. At the same time kangaroo will remain supple and soft by comparison. This allows the wearer to feel very little weight on his/her feet and suggests huge benefits on the playing field. Now about the price - all leather is sold with an assumption that the consumer is sensitive to natural defects from the animals and therefore the shoe manufacturer buys the highest grade of material. (I have always believed that the average consumer would rather see some naturally occurring blemishes so as to guarantee the authenticity.) Kangaroos are a wild animal and roam the bush - they are not farmed like cows etc and as a result their skins are oftened blemished with scratches and scars. The quantity of A grade skins is very low and although the lower grades are just as strong and light, the manufacturers refuse to use them in most cases. Obviously the small quantity of high grade skins are sold at very high prices and so the end product of a soccer cleat is highly priced. We are currently trying to introduce lower grades into manufacturers which should see the kangaroo cleats drop by up to 35% in price. Wish us luck and keep writing!
