RakaSport..a gentler fitness alternative
Aug 05 '00
I am certified personal fitness trainer living in Miami, Florida. Having completed several 100 mile bike “centuries”, a body building competition, and the equivalent of 8 miles runs daily on the Stairmaster, I am pretty well versed in how to get in shape! Due to several recent major abdominal surgeries, subsequent complications, chronic intestinal problems, etc. my muscle tone, posture and total fitness suffered. It was so hard to get any results. It was exhausting and depressing! Yes, the trainer needed motivation.
RakaSport gave me the motivation to use my body, not abuse it, doing a challenging, multidimensional sport that gave me startling, visible results in just the 5 to 6 weeks I’ve been playing. Plus the game is so much fun. All I thought about was how much fun I was having!! It captures the joy I used to get playing Badminton in the backyard and Kadima on the beach over those many endless summers.
My husband and I grabbed the game off the shelf one lazy Sunday morning, volleying right outside in the driveway. I haven’t stopped since. We have an outdoor racquetball court and I usually play solo. What a challenge to foot, hand and eye coordination. All of a sudden we were moving in every imaginable direction going for the ball while using every muscle. Many of these muscle groups are not used or ignored in most other activities. I found myself using trunk (torso) , shoulder, butt, back, thigh, and calf muscles mimicking “squats and lunges” which I hate; every time I missed a shot or went for a save.
The result was a total change in my body ( I swear, I must be an inch taller), in terms of tight and toned muscles and the flattening of my abdomen. All of a sudden with my surgically weakened belly, I could use my newly toned abdominal muscles to hold everything in place. With six abdominal surgeries in 15 years my hopes were fading for anything close to a flat stomach again. This product in just over 6 weeks was a
savior.
RakaSport is a blast that anyone can use. The giant “birdie” is also easy to use with or without the paddles. The paddles are strung with wide rubber bands which absorb the impact as does the soft foam “nerfy” ball. Now I don’t get the repetitive injuries more common with tennis, racquetball or running, etc.
Another advantage is its portability. I’m packing it in my rollerboard for my next visit to family in New Jersey. My sister even found some walls at various schools around town for me to use. She even said, “go ahead and hit off the side of the house! You can’t break anything.” Exactly!
