Choosing a Shinguard

Jul 06 '00

Top players are looking for the lightest and flexible shinguard, which can provide protection under the strain of some of the toughest tackles in soccer today. Essentially there are two types of shinguards, those with ankle sleeves and those without ankle sleeves. Guards without ankle sleeves are lighter and more effective than those with them. When considering which type of shinguard to use, the two most important factors involved are safety and comfort. Modern technology has afforded players the enjoyment of the lightest guards to date. The traditional guard included a layer of foam protection surrounded by an elastic sock. Although somewhat effective, this style was bulky, hot, heavy, and generally uncomfortable. So you make the choice of which shinguard you think is better, but remember this review.
