Shinguard Technology

Dec 23 '99

Top players are looking for the lightest and most flexible shinguard, which can provide protection under the strain of the toughest tackles. Essentially there are two types of shinguards, those with ankle sleeves those without. Guards without ankle sleeves are lighter and more effective than those with them. When considering which type of shinguard to use, the two most important factors involved are safety and comfort.

Modern technology has afforded players the enjoyment of the lightest guards to date. The traditional guard included a layer of foam protection surrounded by an elastic sock. Although somewhat effective, this style was bulky, hot, heavy, and generally uncomfortable.

Today's shinguards have many highly effective forms of protection, including compressed air capsules, plastic staves and plates, light weight foam, and gel capsules. Perhaps the best shinguard on the market contains a single airated plastic shield with a foam backing, which uses a removable velcro fastener to keep the guard in place.
