Ease that Elbow

Mar 26 '00

Tennis elbow is often confused with bursitis and golfer's elbow, but it actually differs from both. The pain involved will start at the outside part of the elbow, and radiate down to the waist. There will be much discomfort in the gripping and lifting of objects, another major sign of this ailment. There can be several causes of this, including improper position of the elbow during ground strokes. The so called "flying elbow" when hitting a forehand or backhand can lead one to develop this nagging injury. The wrist should remain locked, so that the arm does not flail away and cause lingering damage to the elbow.

Some of the best exercises to combat tennis elbow are very basic. I teach tennis at a college and the two main strengthening techniques I use are as follows. One is to hold a tennis ball out at arm's length, and squeeze firmly, then decrease pressure. You can feel this directly in your elbow, and that tells you that this body part is being worked. Another exercise is to again hold the arm out straight, palms facing down. With your other arm, pull back on the fingers and extend them backwards. This results in stretching the tissues in a beneficial way.

When one is suffering from tennis elbow, then resting from the activity is the best way to recovery. This injury involves small tears in the tendon and muscle tissue, so there must be adequate time to rebuild them. Lift objects with palm facing towards the body. Massaging the area is helpful, and may eliminate some pain. Medicines to take would include aspirin and ibuprofen, which can reduce the swelling caused by damaged tissue. Make sure to read the warning labels though, since overuse of the latter medication can be harmful to the stomach.
