Choosing the right soccer shoes
Mar 27 '00
Choosing the right soccer shoe can be the most difficult decision for a young soccer player or a parent. There are many brands out there...some excellent and some not so good. Whatever brand you choose, the following should assist you in making that all important decision.
First, choose a reputable brand name. As I mentioned before there are many out there. Some of the more popular and reputable ones are Nike, Kelme, Adidas, Diadora and Puma. The last four mentioned have their roots in manufacturing soccer shoes while Nike has made great strides over the last few years. These brands may cost more than other brands but the comfort and increase life they give you, will be more than worth the extra cost. The specific brand you choose may depend on your on the shape of your feet. Some brands are made narrower or wider than others.
The material that the shoe is made from should also be a factor. Kangaroo leather is usually the best material. Though a bit more expensive. It is soft and very light but durable. Allowing your feet to still get the feel of the ball when you are playing. If at all possible avoid all non-leather shoes.
The type of studs should also be a factor. If you can only afford one pair of shoes, you should get the molded multi-purpose type. These can practically be used on under any outdoor conditions. The younger soccer player, 14 and under, should stick to only the molded shoe. Older more advanced players, who can afford two pairs, should also get the screw in studs for very heavy playing conditions.
The fit is also important. Soccer shoes should fit as snug as possible without causing any discomfort. Caution: Soccer players should never buy shoes without first trying them on. Allow for some stretching of the material, especially if it is leather, the more the shoes is worn. As a rule, I never played a game with a pair of shoes without first practicing in them. That way the shoes can adjust to my feet before the real test.
Care for your soccer shoes is also important if you want to get the most out of your investment. You should remove all dirt immediately after use. The shoes should be set in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Once dry you can rub some dubbing into to the leather to preserve its natural properties. For the screw-in shoes the studs can be removed and petroleum jelly placed in the holes to protect against rusting.
