Patch, Repair or Overhaul - what is your age?
Apr 02 '00
I have always heard that age 40 brought patch, patch, patch! But I never knew that age 50 meant repair, repair, repair! And it really makes me wonder if age 60 is going to bring on a major overhaul!
Several years ago my elbow starting hurting real bad (about a 6 on a 1 to 10 scale) I managed along with it until the pain level reached an 8 and off to the Orthopedic Doctor I went. After xrays, probing and questioning, he diagnosed me with tennis elbow. Now I do not play tennis, but this problem can be caused from many things and is an inflammation in the joint. The Doctor prescribed a bandage that had pressure points and I was to return in three weeks. The bandage did not help at all, so I returned for my appointment.
This time, he suggested a shot of cortisone in the elbow. He assured me that the pain for this shot was minor and would probably take care of the problem. So I agreed. THE NEEDLE WAS HUGE! He found the most sensitive spot in my elbow by pressing real hard all over until I came up off the table and then he proceeded to stick the needle into this spot. Next, he moved the needle all around in my elbow! Awful! But overall, I felt about the same and other than watching the needle, it wasn't too bad.
Three hours later I was in terrible pain (about a 15 on a 1 to 10 scale) and by the next morning my pain level was about a 25. The pain was so bad that I seriously considered "super gluing" my arm to my stomach and just never moving it again! After about a week of agony, the pain subsided and then completely left and I could move my elbow freely without any pain or discomfort. A true success!
After about 6 months, the pain returned. There had to be an alternative to another cortisone shot!
I had been reading about magnetic therapy. Studies have shown that magnets may be an effective therapy because magnets improve the blood flow to an injured area and helps the body's natural healing process. Magnets create a magnetic field believed to attract and repel charged particles in the blood creating movement and heat. This in turn, causes the blood vessels to widen, which allows better blood flow, which in turn helps reduce pain and inflammation. Magnets shave been a part of the Chinese medical process for over 2,000 years and has a close relationship to acupuncture and acupressure. In Japan and other Asian countries, magnetic therapy is licensed as a medical devise.
Homedics produces Thera P bandages for the elbow, knee, wrist, shoulder, back, ankle and even a mitt for the hand. Each of these contain powerful magnets, so I thought I would give it a try. The $25 cost for this magnetic bandage seemed minimal if the product worked!
The Thera P Elbow Wrap by Homedics contains 10 powerful magnets, is about 10 inches long with a hole cut out for the elbow bone. The magnets are inside a quilted area surrounding the elbow bone. The wrap velcroes in two places and the inner part of your elbow (where it bends) is open. The Homedic Thera P Elbow Wrap is very easy to put on: just stick your elbow in the hole, hold the bandage against your side and fasten the velcro areas. It is non-bulky and fits under a jacket easily.
In three days I felt much better! I simply couldn't believe it and after wearing it for about a week, I felt cured! Now, anytime I start to feel discomfort in my elbow, I wear it for a day or two until I feel better. This was the best $25 I ever spent.
I have since purchased and used successfully the knee wrap and am really thinking about adapting the shoulder wrap to use on my hip!
So, at age 40 it was patch, patch, patch. Age 50 brought repair, repair, repair - but at least I found a repair method that didn't bring on more pain. Homedics Thera P magnetic therapy - a repair method to cut down on my aches and pains! Are you in pain? Try Homedics Thera P - elbow, ankle, knee, back, shoulder - it may be the best money you ever spend!
