I have just finished the most incredible walk and journey, the Avon breast cancer 3 day. I walked 60 miles in three days, from Bear Mountain to New York City. It was so amazing. I have never been so inspired I feel like I can do anything I set out to do.
I first heard about this walk when I was in the pizzeria. I saw a flyer up on the wall explaining what it was about. " How far would you walk to save her life, if we told you she had breast cancer would you walk farther?" I knew that I had to do this walk, something inside of me told me I had to!! Just less than a year ago my boyfriend’s mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I remembered how horrible it was to see it. To actually see something come in and take over a family. It happened so quickly.
I told my boyfriend about the walk, he really didn’t want to do it. He kept on saying we won’t have time or we won’t be able to raise the money. I said that to my self too, but I kept on going this wasn’t just one of those things that you put off. This was a journey, an adventure!
So I sent in my registration and began the hard process of training and raising money. The 60 miles I thought wasn’t the hardest part it was raising $3,600 that was going to be changeling. My boyfriend and I asked everyone we knew but we still came up short. We were forced attend three flea markets to be able to raise the money. We sold tag sale items and candy. I had made a sign up that said, “ We are walking 60 miles to help fight breast cancer” along with other information. People were touched that we were doing this. They gave a dollar, four, and ten just because. We made over 1,000 just from the flea markets. Something happened when we did these flea markets that touched me and showed me how much of an experience this was going to be. We had a glass jar out that said donations on it. As some people would walk by and put a dollar or two in the jar they would leave would with tears in their eyes remembering all the people they had lost to beast cancer.
After all the hard training and the money rising the day was finally here. Day one of a three-day trip. We had already had begun our walk the day before. We spent 5 hours outside registering and watching the safety video. We learned the reason why the walk was started. To help fight breast cancer and to show people a world that should be lived in everyday, a kind world! As the open ceremonies started on Bear Mountain I knew that this was going to be amazing. Dan, The president of pallota team works (founder of the walk) talked to us, he called us all heroes! I couldn’t believe it! I really didn’t do anything special, I just spent some of my time giving and helping other people. At the end of his talk he all held hands and watched as a circle of survivors walked down off the stage on to the trail. This circle represented all the friends and family lost to breast cancer. Well as the days went on I did feel like a hero.
So many people those 3 days inspired me. And as I list them I know that it is a small list compared to the actual amount.
-The 86-year-old man with the cane who walked the whole 60 miles with his two sons
- The motorcycle crew who helped us cross the streets and was always there with encouragement
- The elementary school that came out during classes and cheered for 5 hours
- The one nun who came out to tell us she was praying for our feet
- The hundreds of people who stood outside of a school. When I felt I could not take another step there support lifted me up and made me finish.
- All the children who came out and cheered us on. Some of them had signs that said “ thanks for walking for my future” and “my dreams can now come true because you are walking”
- All the strangers that handed out water and snacks to 3,000 who walked.
- The two daughters that were walking for their mother that died a couple months before the walk.
- All the men that were walking for their mothers, daughters, and wife’s that had been lost to breast cancer.
- The 800 people that volunteered to help us walk.
- My family who came out everyday and cheered my boyfriend and I on.
- And the 20,000 people who attended closing ceremonies
The closing ceremonies were amazing. They took place in Harlem on Morningside Park. 20,000 people gathered to see us come in. almost one by one we all walked into this pit surrounded by all the people. They all cheered for us!! It was the most emotional thing that has every happened to me. Dan talked again about the walk was and what we had accomplished, than the survivor circle came in and on to the stage. And with that it was over, 3 amazing days over. But as I have learned this past week it isn’t over the sprit of the 3-day will live in me forever. I saw a life that has to be true, a kind life. So everyday I have decided to try to be a little kinder, to slow down and look around and to enjoy life.
I have also decided to make the 3-day a part of my life. My boyfriend and I will part take in the 3-day every year whether it be volunteering or walking. Breast cancer takes so many life’s it is hard to just sit there and do nothing about it. 1 out of 9 women will develop breast cancer. When you are done reading this at least 3 women have found out they have breast cancer. At least one of them do not have the proper insurance to be treated. I never knew any of these static’s. I have more than 9 women in my family. At least one of them will get breast cancer. So I have decided to walk for that person who ever it is. Hopefully if I continue to raise money and walk that one person will have a cure by time she gets it.
I hope I have inspired you in anyway possible even if it was to think about breast cancer. GET A MAMAGRAM! It’s the best possible cure!! If you want to donate money or find out more on the walk email me

I would be happy to call or email you with more info.
There are 7 walks a year in the US. They range from NY, Boston, Atlanta, Cali, Washington.. And so on
Just a little happy side note:
The NY walk raised 7.5 MILLION dollars for breast cancer. We broke a world record. No one has every raised that much money in a single event for breast cancer. Hopefully next year we can top this!!!
All the money that I make from this review will be donated to the 3-day
EVER JOURNEY BEGINS WITH ONE SINGLE STEP!!!!!
