Are you a male and thinking about entering the world of nursing? Have you ever wondered why they're so few men in nursing? If you are young, single and available then you have a chance in nursing. If you're an older, married or unavailable male then you really need to reconsider your options before entering nursing.
The male nurse work environment is frequently hostile, causing us to be on the defensive and less productive. The hostility often stems from a difference in the male and female cognitive process. The statement that "men are from Mars and women are from Venus" truly applies in nursing. Some of the problems witnessed by this RN include abuse from physicians because we don't treat them the way female nurses do. In reverse, the female nurses treat us with hostility, because they perceive men as being treated more professionally by the physicians.
As a male nurse, you can expect less assistance and support from peers and differential treatment in favor of your female counterparts. You can also expect to perform physical and menial task more often than your peers.
The Florence Nightingale portrayal of saintly sanitized femininity is so firmly embodied in the nursing profession, that men are psychologically rejected from the traditional nursing role. Much of the discrimination experienced by men in nursing can possibly be ascribed to society in general. Men are not only entering a profession dominated by women, they are entering a field that many still consider a "female job."
Straight or gay we should be equally offended by questions concerning our sexual orientation. It's no ones business regardless of what the case may be. Have you ever heard a female being asked about her sexual orientation?
According to the Bexar County Texas Archives, gender bias against male nurses is nothing new. In 1808, a San Antonio. Texas hospital employed mostly men as nurses. A century later a sign above the door to the hospital nurses quarters reflected these prophetic words "Entrance to No Mans Land."
We have a long way to go before we will be on an equal footing with female nurses. Think twice before entering "no mans land."
