A little Preparation can go a LONG way!

Nov 11 '00

Moving can be a big pain that almost everyone dreads. Whether you are moving next door, across town, or across the country it can be a very stressful and time consuming time. Some things that can be done to help you in this endeavor are as follows:

•PREPARATION

Are you ready to move? Prior to setting up the moving company; or if you are doing it yourself; you should determine if everything needs to be moved. Do you have a lot of things you do not need or use? If you do; then a garage sale or moving sale is probably the thing to set up. To me it makes no sense to move items in storage, that are not memorabilia or of family value, to a second location to be stored.

On our last move we did just that. Items that we thought we might use in the future were moved from one location to our present location. Those items are doing nothing now but gathering dust.

•PACKING

How do you pack? Do you do it room by room or do you try and just fill boxes? Packing is a science. When I have packed in the past I made sure the boxes were done room by room. I determined that I would pack the less needed items first and needed items last. It made it nice to not have to search for toiletries, kitchen items, and laundry items.

Our last move was one that was done locally. My husband had his friends helping so it made the move much easier. We were able to rent a large moving truck and we were able to make two trips for our move. This allowed me to cheat. I packed the truck room by room. Each box was packed near the furniture that was placed in the truck. We loaded the truck with ease and when it came time to unload the truck each room was filled and the headache of not knowing where something went was eliminated.

My husband was able to get good boxes from his job. I marked the boxes with a lot of description on both sides. This allowed the "Movers" to unload the truck with ease. It also eliminated questions about where something went in a room or bathroom area.

•MOVING THE BIG STUFF

This has always been the big headache for us. On our last move we decided to walk an extra couple of feet and utilize the bigger openings in our home. My husband and his friends moved a couple of items by walking around the back of our home and going in through the sliding glass door. At first this seemed like a lot of extra walking. When it was over the guys said it was much easier to walk further with something heavy than to have to maneuver it around objects and through small doorways. It was important to have plenty of help. It made the move much easier.

•ALLOWING PLENTY OF TIME

One thing we have found with every move is that it takes much longer to move than is originally thought. Something always seems to come up. On our last move we asked those who helped us to allow for most of the day to be taken up. They did and we needed them the whole day. When the day was over all of the heavy stuff was in place and the only thing left was boxes to be unpacked. The help was a blessing.

•THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT MOVING

PLENTY OF PIZZA AND PLENTY OF BEER/SODA! But only after all the moving is done. It is amazing how much grown men will eat and drink. It is important to have plenty of beverages on hand for the move. However, if it is beer you are supplying, I would make sure the moving is done before the first beer is swallowed.
