I see nursing as either feast or famine. This meaning you either have too much staff or not enough. Too many patients or not enough. You love it too much or not enough.
I first got into the nursing field as a CNA in a Long Term Care facility.
I became so emotional when it came to my patients care. I felt that the nurses never listened to me when I had a suggestion. That is why I became a nurse I wanted to help change what I saw as wrong. I have since learned the role of a nurse is not always that easy. Somtimes nurses are so focused on the charting, paperwork, or scheduling we do not see the holistic patient. This is where we have to rely on those CNA's and other personal as a team.
Staffing problems make it extra hard to deliver the type of care most nurses expect to give. I for one have felt overwhelmed on several occasions. Upset patients and/or family members have made it where I wanted to give up. But then this one patient tells you how much he/she appreciated your care and goes out of his/her way to make sure you know. This is what makes it all worth while. We can have 20 disappointments, 20 patients we couldn't reach or save. But when we think and acknowledge the one we did then it is all worth while. It makes me remember why I became a nurse. If I can just help one patient or family member then I feel good about my profession.
