Moving- AAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Mar 20 '00

When the wife and I moved out of a small apartment three years ago into a 3-bedroom double-wide, we fully intended to stay there for at least ten years.
Somehow it didn't work out that way, and around the 1st of January, we had to move again. Amazing just how much we had accumulated in three short years.
If I ever move again, I hope it is when they move me from the funeral home to the cemetery!! HA HA
It is such a huge job, and requires so much effort.
Still, there are ways to make your experience a little less stressful than it has to be. While ours did have its own amount of frustration, even I must admit it could have been MUCH worse.
For us, fortunately, we were not really on a schedule. We had no deadline to meet, and that made it seem a lot more easy to deal with. I realize, though, that for a lot of people that is not the case, and at that it is most important you make it as easy as you can.
The way we did it was pretty easy. One room at a time. Marked each box with not only what it contained, but where it belonged. Stacked those boxes in their proper spot while we were still in that house, and then in turn stacked them in their appropriate room in the new house.
We did it ourselves. Saved money. Each day for several weeks we loaded both vehicles down with boxes, and took them to the new place. One by one, and at different times, we emptied boxes and put their contents in the appropriate spot in the house. Made it seem a lot less stressful than trying to do them ALL at once. We sort of did it all room by room. Got the furniture for each room separately, put away the things that belonged there, then proceeded to the next room.
And probably the most important, and I should add smart, thing my wife did was to designate "yard sale" boxes. If she came across something she no longer needed or wanted, into the "YS" box it went, and when it was full it automatically went to the storage area of the new place, where it remains today, awaiting a nice warm day! We managed to fill several boxes this way, and those boxes (and the items within) are tucked away in an out-of-the-way spot where they don't take up too much room and can be easily retrieved for yard sale season.
When it comes to moving, whether you intend to do it yourself or hire it out, the most important thing is organization. Make sure things have a place to be, and that you take note of what they are and where they go. Throwing stuff into piles and boxes with no organization may take the stress off leaving the old place, but creates some serious headaches when arriving at the new one.
I really don't think ANYONE actually enjoys the process of moving, but proper planning and smart thinking make it a bit less maddening.
