I've been using stamps.com for a couple of months. Getting started is not instantaneous, but it's pretty easy. Because you're printing stamps like a meter, you must apply for a postage license. Getting approved was accomplished within a matter of hours and downloading and installing went by without a hitch.
I started by purchasing $10 in postage because I wanted to try it out before committing too much. There are a couple of different usage plans that you can sign up for. I chose the simple pricing plan where you pay $1.99/month up to $19.99, 10% thereafter, with a maximum charge of $19.99. My credit card was charged accurately for both the postage and service charges. You can print the postage in whatever denomination you need and you can get credit for 90% of your misprinted postage by sending it in.
Entering address information is straightforward, but the program is finicky about which addresses it will print. I often have to rewrite or choose from the alternative wording it offers. It is easiest if you enter the address in the address book and "verify" it before you try to print postage. You will have to spend some time typing in the addresses.
One thing to be aware of is that you must be connected to the internet to print postage. If your connection is unreliable, this may not be a good choice for you.
All of the mail I have sent with the new postage has arrived at its destination. It seemed to take a little longer than expected, but that may just have been the holiday time of year. Today I took a letter I had printed to the post office because it needed to go out today and the employee behind the counter was interested because he hasn't seen many of them yet.
Overall, the process of printing my own postage has been easy and not too expensive. Because I don't send a lot of mail other than paying bills, I am paying a small premium for convenience.
