The following information is from the web site located at http://www.kraftfoods.com/jell-o/history/:
One hundred years ago, Jell-O was little more than a brand name and an unfulfilled dream. Today, if placed end to end, the 413,997,403 packages of Jell-O gelatin dessert produced in a year would stretch three-fifths of the way around the globe with plenty of room to spare. (Author’s Note: That’s a lot of Jell-O!)
During the early quarter of the 20th century, immigrants entering Ellis Island, New York, were served Jell-O gelatin as a "Welcome to America." (Author’s Note: I guess nothing’s as American as Jell-O!)
In September 1936, Decca Records released "A Fine Romance," sung by Bing and Dixie Lee Crosby with Victor Young and his orchestra. Written by Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern for the movie, "Swing Time," the number included the unforgettable words, "You take romance, I'll take Jell-O." (Author’s Note: Don’t know if I’d choose Jell-O over romance, but…)
Jell-O in space made news in June 1996. According to a Reuters dispatch, Shannon Lucid, an astronaut on a 140-day mission to the Russian Mir space station, revealed that she kept track of time by allowing herself to wear pink socks and eat Jell-O on Sundays. When she found that Mir had a refrigerator, Lucid, a 53-year-old mother of three, asked NASA to package Jell-O in drinking bags. She added hot water and put the bag in the refrigerator. After Lucid served her Russian crewmates their first Jell-O as a special Easter treat, they decided to share a bag every Sunday night. "It is the greatest improvement in space flight since my first flight over 10 years ago," Lucid wrote. "Every once in awhile, Yuri will come up to me and say, 'Isn't today Sunday?' and I will say 'No, it's not. No Jell-O tonight!'" (Author’s Note: Is that like saying “Not tonight, I have a headache?”)
Just thought I’d give you a little background to lead up to my story. A year ago I noticed that my son, then in Grade 3, was having a hard time getting through the school week. By Wednesday he seemed to be down in the dumps and frustrated by “hard school work”. (I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was going to be getting a lot harder as time went on, but that’s another epinion! LOL). It was then that I realized that the poor boy was suffering the effects of “Hump Day”. You know what I mean….the “this week is just never going to end” feeling that seems to hit on Wednesday’s. Well, I decided something had to be done, and came up with the idea of “Jell-O Day”.
Every Wednesday is Jell-O Day in our house. The first words out of my kid’s mouths on Wednesdays is “Is it Jell-O Day?” We have a Jell-O Dance, and we do a Conga Line through the house…we’ve even purchased maracas for this weekly event! You may think this is a little weird, I do too, but it really has made a difference in the kid’s week, and that’s all that matters to this Jell-O Mom! It’s amazing how such a little box of gelatin can make all the difference in the world to a child!
We’ve tried many other types of gelatin desserts, but none has come close to the quality and taste of Jell-O brand gelatin.
Regular Jell-O comes in the following flavors:
Apricot, Mango, Berry Blue, Mixed Fruit, Black Cherry, Cranberry-Raspberry, Cherry, Peach, Cranberry, Peach Passion Fruit, Orange, Cranberry-Strawberry, Raspberry Island Pineapple, Grape, Strawberry-Banana, Strawberry, Strawberry Kiwi, Lemon, Wild Strawberry, Lime, and Watermelon.
Sugar Free Jell-O flavors are as follows:
Cherry, Watermelon, Cranberry, Raspberry, Lemon, Strawberry, Lime, Strawberry Banana, Orange, Strawberry Kiwi, and Mixed Fruit.
There’s a myriad of Jell-O molds and cutters available. There are recipe books galore! You can find Jell-O recipes on web sites, in newspapers, and get them from friends. It seems everyone has a favorite Jell-O recipe! Even Blue’s Clues! I’m including this one for you to try! (I’m sorry, I can’t tell you where it came from, a friend emailed it to me, but if you do know the source, please let me know!!!)
BLUE'S CLUES JOY OF JELL-O
Blue's Creamy Blue Jigglers
2 1/2 c Boiling water
2 pkg. (8 oz.) Blue Jell-O
1 c Cold milk
1 pkg. (4 serve size) Jell-O Vanilla Instant Pudding
Stir boiling water into gelatin in large bowl at least 3 minutes until
completely dissolved. Cool 30 minutes at room temperature. Pour milk
into medium bowl. Add pudding mix. Beat with wire whisk 1 minute.
Quickly pour into Jell-O. Stir with wire whisk until well blended. Pour
into 13 x 9 inch pan. Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm. Dip bottom of
pan in warm water about 15 seconds. Cut into decorative shapes with
cookie cutters all the way through gelatin or cut into 1 inch squares
As you can see, Jell-O is a very versatile product, and I for one will always have a box (okay, several boxes) in my house! If you’re at all interested in reading more of the history of Jell-O, which is very long and varied, I’d recommend this web site: http://www.kraftfoods.com/jell-o/history/ . This site has links to recipes and you can purchase molds and recipe books as well.
Oh, and for all you people out there watching your waistlines….Jell-O is fat free!
ENJOY!
