Here is some advice to make America's Job Bank easier. I help people with their job search, and the majority of people who use my services use America's Job Bank. America's Job Bank has many features in addition to job search, including resume builder, employer research, job scout, and personal links.
There is no question that AJB is difficult for people who have never used the computer, which probably doesn't describe the people reading this epinion. That means you have an advantage over most of the people I teach from the start. Usually with just a little instruction, even those people who have never sat in front of a computer are working on their own in five minutes.
JOB SEARCH
First, choose your job title.
You will be given a list of categories to choose from, and you can make your choice either very broad or very specific. However, if you would like to search by keyword, that is an option also. Click on the word "keyword" in red bar.
Second, choose your state
If you would like to search by specific geographic region, click on the "more location options" button. Here you can look up a zip code and search around a radius of a specific city, look in several states, or search throughout the country. Just make sure you click inside the radio button (the circle) on the right or else the computer won't do what you want.
Third, start your search.
When you get your results, click on the eyeball on the left to see the job descriptions. You will only be given the job description at first. To see who posted the job, scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the "how to apply button"
RESUME BUILDER
This feature turns your job search into a two way street allowing employers to search your resume. The printed format of the resume is not my favorite, but it is great for people who have never made a resume before, not to mention the searchability aspect.
The best advice I have for this section is to treat the employment objective as an ad. This is the first thing an employer will see about you, and you want to stand out from the other 500 resume objective he or she might be reading. Keep in brief and in the employers interest.
---------
FOR EXAMPLE
I looking for an office position. I have professional telephone skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and excellent customer service skills.
NOT
sectrary job
-------
Which brings up the point of spell check. There isn't. Use a dictionary.
PERSONAL LINKS
This is intended to act as a bookmark section for people who use public computers for job search. I like this feature a lot, but don't usually see people using it.
EMPLOYER LINKS AND RESEARCH
You will see a section called "other sites". This section allows you to look up other related sites using America's Job Bank. You are provided likes to state sites, Employer sites, Private Agencies, Newspapers & Classified Ads, and Federal Jobs. This section is comprehensive and very useful. If an employer has indicated a web site or URL, they will show up in this list. You can search all the state sites, which includes state government positions as well as other private industry job search links affiliated with the states' homepages. This is great for research purposes, and helps to make AJB more than just job search.
