Sesame Street Live
Oct 29 '00
Last week I took my daughters (ages 4 and 22 months) to a production of Sesame Street Live. The National tour happened to be in my town and I had been waiting for some type of Disney, Barney, Blues Clues, or Sesame Street tour to come to my area so we could go. I am so glad that I had this opportunity, it ended up being a really terrific day for us girls.
There are 3 Sesame Street Live tours that tour nationally 9 months out of the year. According to the website (www.sesamestreetlive) the schedule typically follows the school year. They tour 150 cities nationwide and offer about 900 tours. There are also International tours, but I know nothing about those, however you can find out on their web page.
There are 3 different Sesame Street Live Performances:
1. Let's Be Friends
2. When I Grow Up
3. Big Bird's Sunny Day Camp Out, featuring Elmo's World
I heard that Sesame Street Live was going to be coming to my town from a friend. I checked the website to find out dates, location, and prices. I had about 1 week before the show started in my area and I was able to buy tickets online.
The production that came to my town (Sacramento, CA) was When I Grow Up. This is a very cute tale about growing up. Prairie Dawn is staging a pageant and everyone is supposed to do a production number based on what they want to be when they grow up. Prairie Dawn is so busy getting everything ready for the big show that she doesn't have time to help Big Bird who just has no idea what he wants to be when he grows up. Elmo is here too, he wants to be everything and he tries everything.
The Sesame Street Live production was adorable from start to finish. All the characters are there to delight the kids. There is singing, dancing and even a little audience participation. One daddy was pulled out of the audience by Cookie Monster to dance on stage, he did a great job and the entire audience was in stitches.
There are several different skits featuring the Sesame Street Characters. There is Oscar, Count, Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie, Big Bird, Rosie, Zoe, Honker, Prairie Dawn and of course everyone's favorite....ELMO. The skits are fun and enjoyable for the kids to watch. There are songs to sing, like the Sesame Street song, Itsy Bitsy spider and more.
The kids in the audience love seeing their favorite characters up close. My 22 month old daughter sat on my lap the entire time with her eyes riveted to the stage. She would ask where her favorite characters were each time they left the stage and would scream (happily) when they returned.
My 4 year old kept telling me to take pictures. They do not allow video photography but they did allow pictures. This was great because now my daughters will always have pictures to remind them of our great day.
The show is about an 1 1/2 hour long with a 15 minute intermission. There are 8 different skits in the production all of which are adorable.
You can buy a program at the show for $5 which is also a big activity book and story book. It tells the story of When I Grow Up so kids can look back on it. I used the pictures from the back of my program in my scrapbook.
Sesame Street Live ran for 4 days in Sacramento. Tickets are reduced the first day, all seats were $10. We went on a Friday morning and there were not very many people at all. In fact teh auditorium was less than 1/2 full. Tickets were $15 for adults and $13.50 for kids over the age of 11 months. There are tickets that are priced higher for floor seating but our seats were just perfect for us. My 22 month old did sit on my lap, they still make you pay for a seat even if the child is sitting on your lap.
Tickets may vary depending on where you see the show, check the website. Also, if possible I would avoid buying tickets online. I paid a $3 handling fee and a $7 ticket processing fee (or something like that). My tickets ended up costing me an extra $10 in fees. I recommend buying your tickets from the box office directly, if possibly. You might also want to call ahead and see if tickets are available on the day of the show, there were a lot of people buying tickets that day.
I highly recommend the Sesame Street Live Production. We had a great time and the story is a lot of fun. I think that any of the 3 stories would have been great. Check the website and see if Sesame Street Live is coming to your area. It is a lot of fun and your kids will never forget it.
