Flying with only one ticket
Aug 06 '00
If you are wondering about flying with a child under 2 yrs of age and only purchasing one ticket for yourself, it can be done. I recently took a trip with my 8 month old little girl from Alabama to Michigan. Because of a tight budget, I opted to let her sit on my lap instead of purchasing a an extra ticket. The flight went well, I was prepared for the worst. We flew small two engine planes and it definately wasn't the most spacious. It is a bit exhausting for the parent. I was constantly keeping her entertained so the other passengers wouldn't be bothered.I had her diaper bag prepared so I wouldn't have to dig for her bottle when she was ready for it.
When you start to take off and land make sure your baby is sucking on the bottle or pacifier so her ears will equalize. A flight attendant told me a horrible story about her little girl and how her eardrums busted because she wasn't sucking on her pacifier when they landed.(The baby she said was sleeping and just had it in her mouth).
My baby was sitting on my lap the whole flight. She fell asleep in flight. I think it was the sound of the plane engines! We had a three hour layover in Pittsburg. That gave me a chance to feed her and to pus her around in an umbrella stroller that I checked in as a carry-on.
If anyone is thinking about flying on only one ticket with their child, I would recommend it. I would make sure that you are mentally rested for the excursion. No breaks for the parent!!!!! Pack extra formula or milk.... for the "just in case" things that may happen. You will probably be exhausted when you arrive at your destination but the passengers will comment on what a perfect baby you have. You will smile and know that you saved a bundle!
