Forget Hotels - Think Hostels

BALLLzzz is going to share a tip with you for seeing America and the world without spending a lot of cash...the American Youth Hostel (don't let the name throw you...it's for all ages).

For 25 bucks a year ($15 for seniors, kids free) you can have access to cheap lodging all over the world. The hostels are usually in cool historical buildings (like the one in Montero, California that's in an old lighthouse) with rooms like dorm rooms and private rooms for families. They're very clean and safe, and the cost for a room here in the US is $8 to $17 a night. Here's one catch: You've got to provide your own sheets, towels, and pillow cases or you can rent them for $2 a night.

You will find them in most major cities, and lots of smaller places. There's one in San Francisco that's awesome. It's at an old Army fort in the Golden Gate National Park, with a cafeteria (cheap food...or you can make yourself at home in one of the communal kitchens), laundry facilities, and internet access. You're within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiardelli Square and Chinatown. $19 a night including sheets.

The one in Key West is $15 a night, and for $20 you can get snorkeling and scuba diving lessons (with equipment), and it's got a cool courtyard and game room and internet access.

I haven't been abroad yet, but there are hostels in nearly every country in the world, and even in cities like London and Rome the cost of the rooms is only around $20 a night.

With your American Youth Hostel card, you can get discounts in all sorts of places, a lot of times you can get free food and drinks at different restaurants and things like that, and big discounts at tourist spots.

They all take reservations, some of them on-line. If you're looking to go out and find America or see the world, consider this alternative to high-priced chain motels.
