Not as hard as you think, if you don't wait until the last minute!

I know that airfares have gotten very silly. And sadly enough several people I know have had to pay twice if not more the normal fare to get somewhere at the last minute. Well, if you also wait until then to book your flights, I cannot help you. Luck is all you have to fall on. BUT, I can give some guidelines to the passenger who plans ahead.
Maybe everything I am going to say is obvious, but I know alot of people who ignore the obvious, so I may still help you.
Plan Ahead! If you are further than say, 2 weeks from departure I can guide you to the best rates with the most comfortable flights.
Check all major search engines for an airfare site. Enter your arrival and departure cities and dates and we're off!
You want to look for airlines that you know. Don't go for Trans-Ocean-We-Can-Fix-A-Broken-Wing- With-Chewing-Gum-International just because they are half the price of the others, there has to be a reason!
Once you have chosen your airline, don't procrastinate about booking. Either book and pay for online (which will make that seat YOURS as of now), or write down the times and flight numbers and call the order in. As soon as possible. Do not delay. You may lose the chance at great rate prices that way. Keep in mind it is so cheap because the flight isn't full yet, and they want to get money now.
Then if you have done everything correctly, you will receive tickets in the mail shortly thereafter.
A couple other helpful hints:
If you went to a search engine to get these rates, or have a favorite airline to do business with, pull them up on the web and fast. From here you can see how often the flight is usually on time, or what seats are still available (I only sit in the aisle seat), and if you will receive a meal or snack. Most importantly, on some airline sites you can pull up a map of the plane to see where you are sitting. And by the way, if you happen to be able to find a flight on an Airbus, you will enjoy it.....new model, smooth flying, and more body room than older models.
These are the guidelines I follow to get the lleast expensive, highest quality, most comfortable flight out there.
